Why Urban Trees Need Watering—Even in Ireland


When people think about watering trees, they often imagine newly planted trees during a summer heatwave. But in reality, urban trees require planned irrigation throughout their establishment period—and increasingly, designers are looking at ways to make this more sustainable.

Many urban trees are surrounded by hard landscaping such as paving, asphalt and kerbs. While it may appear that a tree receives plenty of rainfall, much of that water is diverted into surface drainage before it can infiltrate the soil.
Compacted ground, impermeable surfaces and limited soil volumes can all restrict the amount of water reaching the roots.

To overcome this challenge, most modern street tree installations include an underground watering and aeration system.
During construction, a watering inlet is installed within the tree pit, typically concealed beneath the finished landscape. This allows maintenance teams to deliver water directly into the root zone rather than simply watering the surface, where much of it would evaporate or run off.
These systems are particularly valuable during the first few years after planting, when trees are establishing their root network and are most vulnerable to drought.
By directing water exactly where it is needed, maintenance crews can improve watering efficiency while helping ensure long-term tree survival.

Rather than treating rainfall as a waste product to be removed from a site as quickly as possible, SuDS seeks to manage water where it falls.

By directing runoff from roofs, streets and paved areas into engineered tree pits, stormwater can be used to irrigate trees naturally before slowly infiltrating into the ground or being stored temporarily within the system.
