Mature trees – is the investment worth it?
The old saying is – the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.
But what if the the tree you plant now has to be replaced once or twice by the time 20 years goes by? Is that a successful result?
Mature trees in our towns and cities contribute significantly to our health and well-being in a multitude of ways. For example, a large tree with a trunk diameter of 75cm (30”) can intercept 10 times more air pollution, can store up to 90 times more carbon and contributes up to 100 times more leaf area to the tree canopy than a 15cm (6”) diameter tree.
Recent studies indicate that there are a declining numbers of larger trees in our urban areas. Older, larger tree species are routinely being replaced by trees which are much smaller in stature even when fully grown. Poor planting methods result in 50% of urban trees dying within the first 10 years of being planted.
This short term cost saving and lack of foresight will have consequences for future generations if we do not seek to work ahead to provide conditions now for trees to thrive into maturity.
Our Street Tree Cost Benefit Analysis booklet explores the long term Cost vs Return on Investment, to request a printed copy email us to email@example.com or download a PDF copy from this page

Derry Tree Planting
The beautification of the ‘city of culture’ was a huge public realm scheme in the heart of Londonderry. With its origins as a settlement in an Oak Grove it is fitting that upgrades to the centre of Derry (Londonderry) have recognised the importance of long term planning for healthy trees.View Project
