North Wall Avenue demonstrates how urban tree planting can combine high-quality public realm with integrated SuDS performance in a dense city-centre setting.

Believed to have been one of the earliest tree-pit SuDS installations in Ireland, North Wall Avenue creates a strong tree-lined streetscape through the dense Docklands setting. The planting helps soften the surrounding brick façades and taller buildings while also providing shade, cycle parking and integrated parking bays.
More importantly, the trees form part of the street’s surface-water drainage strategy rather than functioning as conventional standalone tree pits. Runoff from the carriageway is collected through kerb drainage gullies and directed into the tree pits, where the StrataCell rooting system provides uncompacted soil volume and temporary stormwater storage. The drainage design also incorporates a connection back to the surface-water sewer, providing an overflow route when the tree pit capacity is exceeded.
The tree pits were designed with StrataCell, root-zone irrigation, kerb inlets, root barriers and underground anchoring, with Roughan & O’Donovan acting as Consulting Engineers.
