A new, greener, urban pedestrianised area balancing the demands of a pleasant urban environment and the requirements for the access of heavy goods vehicles.

The project commissioned by the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Co Co Parks Department transformed Myrtle Square in the heart of Dun Laoghaire town into a dramatic open destination space. The new pedestrianised area balanced the demands of a pleasant urban environment and the requirements for the access of heavy goods vehicles.
Greening formed a central pillar of the project vision. The ambition to introduce generous planting into the heart of the town was strongly supported during the public consultation process, reflecting a clear appetite for a greener urban centre. Beyond enhancing the visual character of the area, the landscape strategy delivers measurable functional benefits. Tree canopies, root systems and soft landscape areas help to intercept rainfall, reduce surface run-off and mitigate the urban heat island effect. The inclusion of significant tree planting also improves environmental quality through the capture of airborne particulates and the absorption of carbon dioxide, contributing to wider public health and sustainability objectives.
