Magherafelt Public Realm

When Magherafelt town centre was refurbished in 2016 the existing old trees were replaced with new oak trees planted around the central roundabout and alongside the approach roads.

To ensure protection  from root heave damage the architect selected our Medium RootDirectors to manage the new root growth downwards away from the pavement.  Additional soil volume was created at the base of these using the RootCell soil modules to create rooting volume in the very constricted space between the service runs and our Castle tree grilles were used to carry the paving across the tree pit to leave an uncluttered look to the streetscape.

By the end of the 2019 growing season these trees had put on noticeable girth extension and are establishing well.  Although the constructed tree pit has a relatively modest soil volume we are hopeful that  with this good start these trees will have the vigour to break out beyond the tree pit and mature.
